I love the government that our Founding Fathers gave us, a Federal government. As you know, a Federal government shares the governing power between the Central Government (Washington D.C.) and the States. This, of course, is different than a Centralized Government, such as France today, or the former Yugoslavian government. Under those systems, the Centralized Governments do not share the power.
I like what Mark Levin said today on his radio show. My understanding of his points is as follows. It is difficult for one centralized city to rule a vast, large land mass that is culturally diverse. Wherever it has been tried under such circumstances, it has failed (e.g. USSR). It could work in a relatively small, homogenous country. The benefit of the United States Federal system is that it allows for the benefit of a centralized government (e.g. shared defense, common currency, international treaties) while allowing for experimentation at a state level. For example, if a state opts for gambling, another state opts for no concealed weapons, and another state (like Hawaii) wants to try Universal Health Care Coverage each state can try it and if other states believe it is working well and would like to try it, they are welcome to it.
A problem arrises when a group of people attempt to find a single set of laws for a culturally diverse group of people, such as the citizens of the United States. From Hawaii to Maine, we are very different. Who would argue that rural Mississippi and San Francisco have significant cultural differences? The beauty of the US Federal System, as founded by the Founding Fathers and documented in the US Constitution, is that it allows Progressively minded people to band together and enact laws that reflect their morals, world view, and tax structure. At the same time, conservative citizens may reside in a different state and govern themselves in a manner consistent with theirs. While, at the same time, the Progressives and Conservative citizens provide for each others mutual defense against foreign enemies and use the same currency.
This is not about Republicans, Democrats, Abortion, Gun Control, or any other political single issue. This is about Freedom for the individuals to self-govern.
